“Grooming & Growing Youth Potential Through Education and Career Exposure”

Lifesgud.com has been active since 2008 in raising consciousness and creating community awareness about homeless youth (street kids) and the challenges facing homes/orphanages that accommodate children up to the age of 18. We have been highlighting these issues to the general public, our clients and to the corporate sector. These initiatives have resulted in Lifesgud.com organising charity drives like collecting clothes, blankets and food at various times of the year. We also encourage the public to come and spend time with these children at the homes so as to connect with them and understand their challenges.

The charity organisations we have been involved with in one way or another are Twilight Children's Home (boys shelter) in Hillbrow <www.twilightchildrenshome.co.za>, The House (girls’ shelter) in Berea and Soweto Kliptown Youth (SKY) in Kliptown, Soweto. We are looking to do more through having identified a specific challenge that youths face when they have to leave the projects. Their main challenge being lack of access for further education or entry level jobs which pushes them to end up back on the streets without any hope for the future.

Take An Orphan Child to Work Year was borne out of this need to do something about the situation. The team at Lifesgud.com has come up with an initiative that individuals, companies, education & religious institutions can get involved in and sponsor through their own community social investment departments. Parties involved can commit to adopting atleast one youth between the ages of 15 and 20 who get exposed to the world of work during school holidays and agreed-upon weekends throughout the year. The intention of this project is to stimulate the youths’ capacity to dream and persue a better life through access to learning about various careers to persue and sponsorship to bursaries and further education.

Each organisation has a unique learnership, internship or scholarship program and we understand and appreciate that, which is why we view our role as a catalyst movement that helps to foster relationships between charity organisations and corporate & educational institutions. We aim to support charity organisations who have youth that meet the requirements. We are continuously looking for ways to spread this message as a public awareness campaign through strategic partnerships with media houses.

We are raising funds to build a website called <www.takeanorphanchildtoworkyear.org> which will be specific to this project thereby giving the international community an opportunity to contribute through the strong links we have forged with people in European countries like the UK, Germany and The Netherlands as well as certain states in the USA.

This initiative will empower the youth in shelters and orphanages thereby reducing dependency on the country’s social welfare system.

Conclusion:

It almost sounds cliched to say “DIVIDED WE FALL, UNITED WE STAND”. This statement is the essence of community building, which in turn builds the societies and countries we live in. We can either choose to join and play an active role no matter how big or small in ensuring a better society for our future generations by starting with today’s orphaned kids and child-headed families.
